KelsoAbbey900
Building on over 900 years of history and learning
On May 3 2028,Kelso Abbey celebrates 900 years since its foundation by David 1, in 1128.
Over 100 years in the building with thousands of masons and artisans employed in its construction; Kelso Abbey was, alongside Roxburgh, the powerhouse of a Kingdom.
David 1 of Scotland, from his Borderland's base helped establish civic and religious order through his Kingdom. The burgh system, abbeys, wool, fish and agriculture helped drive trade nationwide and into Europe. Kelso Abbey housed one of the most important medieval libraries, and disputes over land were resolved through the Vatican. Roxburgh with its mint, schools and castle was effectively the capital of Scotland and the north of England..
KelsoAbbey900 will celebrate this extraordinary legacy by ensuring Kelso Abbey will stand for another 100 years as a beacon for learning,, historical research, and most importantly as a focus for the diaspora of Kelso and its Borderlands, people and places.
Join us in supporting the KelsoAbbey900 project as we move forward into a new century supported by this iconic building and those who lived, loved, learned, worked, fought, died and illuminated this extraordinary place.
